OEL Manga, your thoughts

I have a question for everyone. I'm sure that everyone who has a group of friends into anime/manga/ect. has one friend who scribbles out manga characters and/or plans on making their own manga. You may be that person. However, at the same time there seems to be a prejudice by the otaku when it comes to buying anything that is "anime like" that isn't from Japan. I was wondering your thoughts on the subject. Can someone who hopes to publish their manga overcome it, and how. Also, if you yourself are guilty of blacklisting non-Japanese manga. Myself, I bought about four of Tokyopops Rising Stars of Manga books way back when, but that's it. Mainly, because I'm a hard sell for any manga.
